Rattler in full force at Speedo Sectional Championships

The 5 day meet at belmont plaza in Long Beach was a very strong showing for Rattler.

Caitie Hawthorne posted 2 personal bests including a 2:06.6 200 backstroke. Lilly Parks also had a pair of personal bests with a 1:06.2 and a 2:23.3 in the 100 and 200 breast. Garrett Hubbard swam a monster 52.3 100 back and 1:53.5 200 back, both swims were fast enough to make the finals session. Valerie Orellana had personal bests in the 200 fly at 2:06.0, and the 200 free at 1:58.8. Heidi Zeiger swam just off her season best in the mile in 17:33, good enough for a top 16 finish. Gary Arthur swam a season best 52.6 in the100 fly. Nina Morrison rocked a 54.0 100 free and 1:56.7 200 free. Chloe Kargodorian swam a personal best 55.6 100 free leading off the 400 free B relay and swam a super fast 1:00.2 100 fly leg on the 400 medley B relay. Grant Richman went out 2 seconds faster than his personal best at the 100 in his 200 fly, and held on strong to finish the race in a 2:04, knocking 4 seconds off his best time. Sami Elam raced to personal bests in the 100 free posting a 55.3, and the 500 free with a 5:11. 12 year old Christina McCoy slipped under the 26 second mark and raced to a 25.9 in the 50 free.

Meghan Hawthorne and Andrea Kropp led the way in points by qualifying for numerous finals and setting 2 new team records a piece. Meghan swam a 2:02.2 in the 200 backstroke and a whopping 2:02.9 in the 200 fly, which were 2 and 4 second drops from her best times. Andrea Kropp lowered team records in the 100 breast with 1:02.5, and the 200 breast in 2:12.0. In the 200, Andrea pulled ahead of the 2009 World Championships Silver medalist at the 100 mark and never looked back. The race put her just 2 tenths of a second off the 15-16 age group Southern California record and won her the Gold Medal.

The womens 400 medley relay team of Meghan Hawthorne, Andrea Kropp, Valerie Orellana, and Nina Morrison added a very dramatic end to the competition on Tuesday night. They split 57.7, 1:03.1, 57.8, 53.2 for a 5th place finish overall. They were seeded 16th. The relay was under the time standard for the 2009 short course USA National Championships, and just one second off qualifying for the 2010 USA National Championships! The Rattler girl will get another crack at that time standard next month at the USA Grand Prix in Long Beach.
