What a "Grand" Prix it was!

 
With Phelps, Grevers, Soni, Hoff, Kukors and a number of other Olympians racing, the tone was easily set for fast swimming.

Valerie Orellana pumped out personal bests in the 100 fly (56.98), 200 fly (2:04.69), and 200 back (2:05.32), both fly races qualified for consolation finals and surpassed the 2009 short course national standards. Gary Arthur hit a personal best in the 100 fly (51.41), and narrowly missed the 2010 summer Jr National cut in the 200 fly by .04, he rocked a (1:52.03) in consolation finals to smash his own team record. Garrett Hubbard made his first summer Jr National cut when he raced to a (1:51.34) in the 200 back, the swim was one of 5 personal bests for Garrett, along with his (51.45) 100 back and (52.50) 100 fly. Both of Garretts backstroke races and 200 IM (1:56.16) qualified for consolation finals. Nina Morrison raced to personal bests in the 100 free (53.81) and 500 free (5:05.34), and she posted a (52.79) free split on the womens 400 medley relay. Lilly Parks made consolation finals with a personal best (2:22.36) in her 200 breastroke and was just off her personal best in her 100 breast (1:06.35) which also qualified for the evening session. Chloe Kargodorian swam a personal best in the 50 free (25.75), after having monster races last week at the Q meet. Caitie Hawthorne swam just off her personal bests with a (5:06.06) 500 free and a (2:06.79) 200 back. Heidi Zeiger broke her own team record in the 1000 free with a personal best (10:25.14), and swam a season best (24.53) in the 50 free. Alanah Bird raced to 3 season bests in the 100 free (55.59), 100 breast (1:08.86), and 200 breast (2:29.01). Peter Kropp rocked a blazing (2:15.32) personal best in the 200 breast, just .03 off the Mens team record. Peter, at only 13 years old, will no doubt rip that record to shreds.

The Team point leaders at the meet, Andrea Kropp and Meghan Hawthorne, helped push Rattler to a Top 15 team finish. Both Girls qualified for finals in all of their events and got to push themselves in the Big heats against world-record holders and Olympic Champions. These 2 girls combined to break 5 team records at the meet.

Meghan swam personal bests in the 200 back (2:01.12), the 100 back (56.74), the 100 fly (55.22), and the 200 free (1:49.76). Meghan swam in the Big final heats in both the 100 fly and 200 IM, where she placed 8th and 5th overall.

Andrea swam personal bests in the 200 fly (2:01.62) and the 200 breast (2:11.94), which won her the bronze medal. Andrea qualified for the Big finals in all 5 of her events and was seeded number 1 going into finals in the 200 breast after topping world-record holder Rebecca Soni in prelims. Her 200 breast was 1 tenth of a second off the Southern California 15-16 age group record.

In the final event of the meet, Rattler's women (Meghan Hawhorne, Andrea Kropp, Valerie Orellana, and Nina Morrison) earned a bronze medal in the 400 medley relay. The girls were less the 3 seconds out of first place, and over 5 seconds ahead of 4th place. They split 57.2, 1:04.2, 57.0, 52.7, swimming 9 tenths of a second off the Summer Nationals standard. It was the 11th swim for Kropp and the 13th swim for Hawthorne at the competition!
